Trade week

You'd think that its a quiet week for research for the DFL draft. Not the case!

First of all the best & fairests have been completed at most clubs. These give a good insight as to what players are improving and will be consistent. Most are fairly obvious but there's a few interesting ones.

Also interesting is trade week. Tim Callan didn't play much for Geelong? He's now a Bulldog so maybe he'll play more games. Other trades can be seen here. It all needs to go into the batcomputer.

DFL Presentation Night

Last night was the presentation of trophy and medals at Steve's place. All DFL coaches were there except for Michael Inglis. Rob stood in for Inglis. I had beer, bbq and car left over from the grand final day a week ago so I was set. Kunal wasn't set as he brought diet lemon, lime and bitters drinks and was playing the next day. He struggled through though.

It was a great night. We had the chimenea going so we could all stink like woodfire. BBQ was tasty. We all talked about footy and work and stuff. We played an AFL darts tournament. Preliminaries were Keith versus me and Rob versus Steve. Steve was so busy bagging Keith he lost to Rob. Rob ended up winning that. We all bagged Steve. We also sung woopen spool to Steve for his wooden spoon. Rob got Inglis' medal for Alwyn Davey being best first year player. Steve got a Callum Chambers medal for worst draft pick in Buckley. Keith got the Matty Allan award for Jeff White. Jeff White has been carrying Keith's team for years.

Darcy played with Steve's wooden spoon. Steve explained that it was for special people in special buses that went to special schools. So Darcy announced she wanted to go to the special school too which made us laugh.

We discussed expanding the comp with Petros coming in. This would necessitate getting rid of retention. I watched Rony get his cup. The cup that was in my grasp for most of the season. If only I knew what I did right this season I could do it again next season. I'm already gathering B&F stats and other random bits of information to feed into my drafting spreadsheet for 2008.

Texas Hold'Em was played with $5 put in by each person. Gibbo was the early leader, lost three straight hands that he should have won, and crashed out. I started out not winning a hand for ages but ended up winning the first comp. Felt good. Steve was burning though as he was out first and was bored.

Played a second comp whihc ended up being Rob and Steve playing with me dealing at 2:30 . I was pleading with them to finish. They were both playing far too conservatively. Especially Steve who initially had a huge chip advantage. I announced I'd be leaving so they both went in and Steve won. He initially refused the meeting as it wasn't a proper win. I offered to take the money and he changed his mind.

Good night, felt like a night spent with good mates. Comfortable, very funny, all good.

DFL 2007 - Finals preview, Season review - 1st place, Drunken Feral Bushpigs

KAOS coach Mick Inglis takes a completely biased look at your team’s finals prospects – or, if you suck, your now-dead season in review – in 8 separate emails, just to spam your inboxes out of spite.

1st place

Drunken Feral Bushpigs
Coach – Andy “selection storytime” Sekeris
15 wins (best streak – 13, unbroken)
3 losses (worst streak – 2)
111.82%

After a slow start, the Drunken Ferals reaped the rewards of possibly the most injury-free season of any DFL club, with some 8 players playing all 18 H+A games. Consistency, high scoring flair, a coach who actually improves his team when he submits IN/OUTs, the Bushpigs appear to be the complete package in 2007.

Season High –

In what quickly became more of a “how high can I score” than a “will I win this week” for the Ferals, the round 14 record score of 783 to crush their primary rival the Rugged Sharks by 175 points surely stands out as the brightest point of the Pigs season to date.

Season Low –

The 654-667 loss to Lismore in round 5 was the last time the Pigs tasted defeat. It would be all clear sailing from here.

Best drafting –

Jimmy Bartel has ripped the competition apart, Dustin Fletcher was far from the first FB taken but easily the best, while a complete glut of star performers saw the Pigs drowning in an embarassment of riches at the selection table from week to week.

Worst drafting –

None of the lower-draft selections provided much value, but this was more due to the fact that the team was so settled than any indicator that the coach was blind and picking idiots. The fact that no Essendon scrub was taken after round 22 by this coach shows he came to draft day meaning business.

2007 finals prospects –
While a single upset courtesy of the Sharks or a freak KAOS performance might be possible, it wont happen two weeks in a row, which leaves us at “who will the Pigs play” in the grand final. As has been proven often in footy, anything can happen on that final day, but the safe money says the Pigs to win the flag, and do it in style.

DFL 2007 - Finals preview, Season review - 2nd place, Rugged Sharks

KAOS coach Mick Inglis takes a completely biased look at your team’s finals prospects – or, if you suck, your now-dead season in review – in 8 separate emails, just to spam your inboxes out of spite.

2nd place

Rugged Sharks
Coach – Rony “stats” Miranda
12 wins (best streak – 3)
5 losses (worst streak – 2)
1 draw
106.68%

After starting the season head and shoulders above the competition, the Sharks were solid if not convincing in their journey to second place. A late loss in round 16 to the Chickens put the hard word on Rugged in round 18, where they answered the challenge by smashing the Boners to seal 2nd place in a match where a loss meant finishing 4th. While not experiencing the domination of past seasons, the Sharks have built a solid platform from which to defend their premiership title.

Season High –

The 740-566 thumping of the Big Boners in round 18 shored up an otherwise unconvincing season, and bought the Sharks the right to lose a final in their quest for back to back flags.

Season Low –

The loss to the same side in round 4 (652-677) removed an aura of invincability that had been built around Rugged in the early rounds.

Best drafting –

To find the best value draft selection by any club in 2007, one need only look at the 39th round pick by the Rugged Sharks. Hamish McIntosh scored so heavily that he took over the #1 ruck position from DFL heavyweights Everitt and Simmonds, and is a certain retention or 6th round pick next season. Edwards, Harvey underpinned their value as early round picks, while a glut of talented “good ordinaries” taken through the middle of the draft allowed Rony to swing the changes from week to week and still maintain a high scoring rate.

Worst drafting –

If nothing else, the only problem with the Shark’s drafting was too much reliability, not enough shock factor. No one stands out as a terrible pick, but then, too few stand out as clear match winners either.

2007 finals prospects –
Certainties to at least play a preliminary final, likely to see grand final action, but back to back flags? At this point it would take an upset for that to happen. The Sharks have been consistently the second best side in DFL, and im predicting that’s exactly where they will finish.

DFL 2007 - Finals preview, Season review - 3rd place, Lismore KAOS

KAOS coach Mick Inglis takes a completely biased look at your team’s finals prospects – or, if you suck, your now-dead season in review – in 8 separate emails, just to spam your inboxes out of spite.

3th place

Lismore KAOS

Coach – Michael “Denyer” Inglis

12 wins (best streak – 5)

6 losses (worst streak – 3)

99.49%

The only side to have made the finals while boasting a negative percentage, at face value the KAOS appear to have been lucky to make the 5 at all. A closer look however shows the coach’s drafting policy has shone through – when Lismore are good, they can challenge the best. When they are bad, they get smashed. The kings of inconsistancy.

And in finals, percentage matters about as much as Halliwell’s opinion on anything to do with footy.

Season High –

The 717-695 defeat of the Sweet Chickens in round 15 arrested a three game losing streak and set the tone for a charge that would eventually hand the side a double chance come finals time.

Season Low –

After 5 wins in a row the KAOS faced the Ferals, at the time sitting on a 6 win streak of their own. The devastating 558-699 loss sent Lismore into a three match losing streak.

Best drafting –

Cornes and Cornes were golden retentions, while Corey and Simpson lived up to their early-round selection. Hird and Harvey were both good value selections late in the draft.

Worst drafting –

Brett Voss at 17 stands out, as does Didak at 19 and picking up Gibbs and Hansen at all. In fact, most of Lismore’s drafting after round 16 was pathetic.

2007 finals prospects –

While a straight sets exit is possible and even likely for the KAOS, the proven potential to score big through Cornes, Cornes and Brown leaves Lismore as the legitimate dark horse of DFL2007.

DFL 2007 - Finals preview, Season review - 4th place, Big Boned Boys

KAOS coach Mick Inglis takes a completely biased look at your team’s finals prospects – or, if you suck, your now-dead season in review – in 8 separate emails, just to spam your inboxes out of spite.

4th place

Big Boned Boys

Coach – Michael “knobs” Gibson

11 wins (best streak – 5)

7 losses (worst streak – 2)

100.92%

The first of the four teams that might yet be holding realistic premiership aspirations, the Boners season remains teetering on the edge of “almost but no cigar”. No 700 scores, a consistent list that performs without threatening to explode, and just a bit more luck than the very similar scoring Sweet Chickens have conspired to leave the Boners hanging in fourth after sitting a game clear at the top at the half way point of the season.

Season High –

The 677-652 victory over the Sharks in round 4 stands out, after Rony had looked like destroying the competition in the first three rounds, and established the Boners as a credible team in 2007.

Season Low –

The 679-704 loss to the KAOS in round 17 effectively killed the Boner’s shot at a Qualifying final, as the draw conspired to give Lismore an easy win against the D Rucks and pit the Boners against the rampant Sharks in round 18.

Best drafting –

Lockyer was spectacular value in round 14, Shane Crawford would be dirty if he knew that two Hawthorn supporters let him last until round 20, while Brad Sewell and Brent Guerra showed this coach knows his hawks.

Worst drafting –

Kayne Pettifer was a questionable take in round 10, Jason Johnson at 15 made us Bomber fans laugh, as did selecting Kepler Bradley at all.

2007 finals prospects –

Should (make that, will) win this weekend, and will meet the loser of Lismore and the Sharks in the 1st semi the week after. A preliminary final appearance is realistically achievable, but its hard to see them surviving to the bitter end if their inability to break 700 continues.

All-DFL side for 2007 regular season

Here it is:
